(Reuters) – Joe Girardi will not return next season as manager of the New York Yankees, the Major League Baseball team said on Thursday.

Girardi, who just concluded a four-year, $16 million contract, won a World Series title and guided the Yankees to the post-season in six of his 10 seasons as manager.

Girardi and the Yankees were one win away from reaching this year’s World Series but fell to the Houston Astros in Game Seven of the American League Championship Series on Saturday.

”I want to thank Joe for his 10 years of hard work and service to this organization,” Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said in a statement.

“Everything this organization does is done with careful and thorough consideration, and we’ve decided to pursue alternatives for the managerial position.”
