Austria’s Vincent Kriechmayr edged home favorite Beat Feuz by 0.14 seconds in Switzerland on Saturday to win the oldest, longest and fastest race on the men’s World Cup circuit.
In the 89th edition of the downhill race, Kriechmayr provided Austria with its 31st win in the historic race, while the 27-year-old’s victory also means an Austrian has won every men’s World Cup race in 2019.
In sunny and crisp conditions, Kriechmayr crossed the line in 2:28.36 to ruin Feuz’s hopes of claiming a third downhill title in Wengen. Norway’s young hope Aleksander Aamodt Kilde was third (+0.26) while veteran Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal was fourth (+0.52).
The win provides Kriechmayr with a fourth career World Cup win and ninth overall podium.
He is fourth overall in the World Cup standings which is led by compatriot Marcel Hirscher, the double Olympic gold medalist from PyeongChang 2018, who is on course to secure an unprecedented eighth overall crown.
On Friday, Marco Schwarz gave Austria its first win of the weekend in Wengen, claiming the Alpine Combined — 18 days after winning his first World Cup race, the City Event in Oslo.
