(Reuters) – Authorities locked down a North Carolina prison on Thursday after fires were set during an escape attempt that left 10 people injured, but no inmate succeeded in breaking out of the facility, officials said.

The people injured at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City were transported to a local hospital, Peter Sengenberger, a spokesman for the medical facility, said in an email.

The hospital, Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, declined to provide details on the conditions of the patients.

The situation at the prison, which is located less than 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia, was under control, the state Department of Public Safety said on Twitter, less than two hours after sending out an alert on social media about the melee.

Though it said some prison employees were among those injured in the incident it did not specify how many and public safety officials could not be reached for further comment.

Sengenberger had originally said 14 people were injured at the prison, but he later said that figure was incorrect.

Pasquotank, a high-security prison for men, had 729 inmates on Thursday, according to the Department of Public Safety.
