HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong braced for typhoon Khanun, with authorities raising the third-highest weather warning signal early on Sunday and some transport services in the Asian financial hub shutting down because of the strong winds.

Khanun is about 260 kilometers (160 miles) to the south of the city and is expected to move within 200 kilometers in the afternoon, causing winds to strengthen and some potential flooding, the weather observatory said.

Ferries to and from Hong Kong, to Macau and nearby islands, were suspended, the transportation department said, while some flights out of the city to Taiwan and mainland China were canceled, according to notices posted at the Hong Kong international’s website.

The adverse weather struck Hong Kong about two months after Typhoon Hato, a maximum category 10 storm, caused havoc in the city and deaths in nearby Macau, with massive flooding and disruption to transportation.
